Memphis

Memphis the largest city in the state of Tennessee located south of the confluence of the Mississippi and Wolf rivers. One of the most visited cities in the United States is known as the home of blues but its number one attraction is undoubtedly Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley which is estimated to be visited by one half of a million tourists per year.

Graceland is an absolute must-see if visiting the city of Memphis though it is best avoid it on the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death due to large crowds. The former home of the "King" is the second most visited private home in the United States after the White House and was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as the National Historic Landmark. The trip to Memphis is not complete without visiting Graceland whether you are fan of Elvis Presley or not (which is hard to imagine).

Though many people visit Memphis only to see the world-famous Graceland the city offers plenty to see and do. Memphis is also known as the home of blues and if being a fan of the blues music you will definitely enjoy the Beale Street in Downtown Memphis. It is the second busiest street in the United States after the Bourbon Street in New Orleans and is filled with numerous bars and clubs many of which feature live music. Music fans will also enjoy guided tour of the Sun Studio where Elvis Presley made his first recordings as well as the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum dedicated to Memphis music history and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

The Pink Palace is one of the top attractions in Memphis. It was built by Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggy Wiggly in the 1920's. He lost the mansion in due to financial difficulties very quickly and the house was transformed into museum in 1930. The Pink Palace houses a large number of items related to history of Memphis including a replica of the first Piggy Wiggly, pre-Columbian artifacts and Native American pottery from the 15th century as well as fossils, dinosaurs, mounted animals and many other exiting and educative collections. In addition to the museum, the Pink Palace features a planetarium and an IMAX theater.

The Pink Palace is a part of the Pink Palace Family of Museums which also include Lichterman Nature Center where you learn more about the local wildlife, the Mallory-Neely House and the Magevney House which is one of the oldest private homes in Memphis and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors interested in history will also like the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968.

If having kids along you can take them to the Children's Museum and to the Memphis Zoo which is one of only four nation's zoos that house the Giant Panda. Before leaving Memphis, make sure you take Mississippi riverboat cruise offering the best way to experience the greatness and mightiness of the largest river in North America.
